How the Continuous Wire Process Works

A closed diamond wire loop travels around guide wheels and through the workpiece. The diamond coating performs the cutting while wire tension, guide alignment, feed force and debris removal keep the cutting path stable. Because the loop moves continuously in one direction, there is no programmed reversal at the end of a reciprocating stroke.

The cutting result is produced by the complete system: machine rigidity, wire condition, guide-wheel alignment, fixture support, coolant or cleaning method, and the internal condition of the gemstone. The process can reduce edge impact and kerf compared with some conventional methods, but the actual benefit must be confirmed by a representative sample cut.

The fixture should restrain the stone without concentrating force on a weak corner or natural fissure. For an irregular workpiece, conforming support may be more important than higher clamping force. The operator should also identify where the wire enters and leaves the material, because the final breakthrough area is often the most vulnerable to edge damage.

Wire, Tension and Feed

Wire selection should match the material, required kerf, cut depth and surface target. Excessive feed can increase wire deflection or crack risk, while insufficient feed may extend the cycle and allow unnecessary rubbing. Tension, wire speed and feed should be adjusted as a coordinated set and recorded during sample testing.

Cooling and Cleanliness

Where fluid is permitted, it can help remove debris and stabilize the cutting zone. The selected fluid must be compatible with the gemstone, any composite backing and the downstream cleaning process. If a dry or restricted-fluid process is required, the wire condition and debris path need separate evaluation.
